In 1987, the Brundtland Commission of the United Nation defined sustainability as:
"meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Fortunately, there is much more awareness today of the need for greater sustainability - especially among the younger generations.
Unfortunately, there is still much that needs to be done; not only in continuing to raise and increase awareness but also with regard to working towards changing mentalities about everyday practices.
For that to happen, we need to show there are alternatives and provide practical solutions. Thus, a major aim of this project is to discover and disseminate alternatives and solutions for the most wasteful practices and the more damaging uses of our planet’s finite resources.
Then, of course, there is social sustainability which covers issues like poverty, inequality, education, health, peace and stability, water provision and sanitation in general. These, too, are important areas that we will be working to impact and address through the various initiatives we have planned to implement throughout our journey around the globe.
