“Today we spent an incredible day because we had an opportunity to get acquainted with people who have one more chromosome than usual. They are perhaps more well-known as people with Downs Syndrome. Three of us, who expressed willingness to help them with their basic waiter’s routine, went first to meet their parents. The women were lovely, I especially admired Anna’s mother. From the beginning, I noticed that it’s pretty hard to establish a friendly bond with Anna, probably because she is shy. Nevertheless, we managed to work well as a team, cleaning tables, receiving client’s orders, etc. Gradually we started to get along much better. We had lunch together to make them feel part of the WLE team. I have to admit that after a while, we could barely stop Anna telling us stories in Macedonian. I could understand only a few words: dances, artist, travel. Later, her mother explained that there was a world dance championship for people with Downs Syndrome, and the team from Macedonia won third place. That’s why she so likes to be on the stage and to travel to different places. I hope to meet them one more time.
Later, we were planting the trees, which brought me a lot of joy. “
“Today was a very sunny day!!
After suffering the cold for a few months, we are finally enjoying the sun and the nice weather here in Skopje. I couldn't be happier!
But the weather was not the only good thing about the day. Today, we had an amazing opportunity to work with people with Downs syndrome. We helped then to organize the Public Room and later, they served some natural soft drinks to the customers, including us. The experience was really touching. Seeing that there are still spaces like the Public Room encouraging people with Downs syndrome to be more involved in their community and making them feel part of it is impressive and makes our work with WLE very worthwhile.
Later in the afternoon, we planted some Basil in small containers and put them at the entrance of the Public Room. They looked lovely and the best thing about it is that they will be used in the Public Room's kitchen to prepare some dishes for the customers. Once again, we are leaving a little of ourselves everywhere we go! Good job guys!
Back at the HiSkopje hostel we all sat in the garden and played some songs and wrote a few lyrics. It was a very special moment for all of us and it felt like we were a big family happy to be together. It kind of reminded me of the early days in Portugal where we would sit for hours in the living room and play some songs and try to get to know more about each other. Yes I love these lucky ones!!”
“Volunteering day, and they are our favorite days: today was really special, the public room makes it possible for people with special needs to be part of a team, to learn and work there. Our task was to give them support in case they need it. We were supposed to guide them to do the job in the best possible way, but in the end it was us who learnt not only about how to work in a restaurant, but also that when if you want to achieve something, you can. Nothing is impossible.
My partner was Oliver we made a great team!”
