“After a 12 hours bus trip with adventures we have finally arrived in Granada. This is our home for the next 10 days. We are going to work here with La Fundación Escuela de Solidaridad. This organization, founded 7 years ago, is fuelled by the love and passion of its founder and visionary - Ignacio.
Ignacio has shared his story with us - the first time he encountered human suffering was when he was 21 years old and he came across two children from an unprivileged family. Their parents didn’t care too much about them, their mother was a drug addict. The children were afraid to return home. That situation had such a profound impact on Ignacio that he still remembers it to this day and it made him think about other people in need, he wanted to help them. As a result, la Fundacion Escuela de Solidaridad was created.
The organization gives home and shelter to homeless people, marginalised groups in society. The society is not always ready to welcome them, but Ignacio is. He doesn’t make distinctions between people. Ignacio’s eyes light up when he talks about his members of the community. Ignacio has kind words for everyone, regardless of the person’s past, origin or background. They are in trouble and Ignacio is ready to help them. His sole purpose in life is serving other people. This attitude is so rare nowadays that we can’t help admiring this wonderful person.
Ignacio’s vision for the community is what drives it forward. He has built it from scratch. Houses, workshop buildings and even a pool were erected on an empty plot. There had been nothing, but land and Ignacio transformed this space into a vibrant community. Glass, tiles, electricity, bike workshops now exist here and give work to a dozen of residents. There are plans to build a small theatre and stage plays in the future.
And this community is 100% eco-friendly! For example, they find old glass bottles and melt them into different objects - ranging from plates to creative paintings. This is art and creativity at its best!
We finish this day by taking a hiking trip. The snow-capped mountains of Sierra Nevada and olive gardens of Granada create a very picturesque picture.”
